Holos Architecture’s Detached Garage Retreat has been featured in Domino’s “Before & After” series. The article highlights our transformation of a once-underutilized 420 sq. ft. garage into a flexible, multipurpose retreat.
“This wasn’t your typical garage conversion,” said Rushika Gill, AIBC, NCARB, Principal of Holos Architecture. “The budget didn’t allow for any structural changes, so we had to work with the existing shell.”
That constraint became a creative springboard. The design focused on smart interior interventions that evolve with the family’s needs, including reclaimed furniture, a butcher block island on casters, and a repurposed vintage utility sink. The space still fits a car but can easily convert into a guest suite, office, or studio as needed.
With its thoughtful material reuse and agile layout, the project reflects Holos’ broader commitment to adaptability and everyday beauty.
“The result [is] like a life-size dollhouse, where the family can move (or roll) around the furniture at a whim for any activity,” added Gill. “It’s a true flex space that can be morphed with their changing needs.”
